Jack Johnson – most inportant world champion of all time ?

As I am sure most people are aware of the prejudice black athletes faced in the past and how over the the past 100+ years boxing has lead the way in tearing down racial barriers to some extent bit by bit thanks to the brave men who stood up to be the best when it seemed the world was against them . Jack Johnson is one who laid the path to help get boxing to where it is today .

At a time when the lynching of black men was common place, any black man with the balls to not just go in the ring with a white  man , but to knock them out time after time takes bravery that we just can’t comprehend in today’s world , that’s the kind of man Jack Johnson was .

Once Jack Johnson had cleaned out all the black heavyweights to become ” black heavyweight champ ” he embarked on a tour round the world chasing down then World Champion Tommy Burns , who himself was touring beating the best every country had to offer .Johnson could be seen Ring side at each and every one of those fights heckling the champion, telling the crowds “this man has nothing on me,I would destroy this man” . Burns finally lost patience with Johnson in Sydney , Australia agreeing to fight Johnson for a purse of $30,000 on Boxing Day 1908 .During the the fight Johnson  humiliated Burns, taunting him in the ring before punishing Burns that much that the local police entered the ring and stopped the fight for fear there would be a fatality naming Johnson the winner, now let that sink in …. a black man as the best heavyweight boxer in the world .

On his return to the US there was uproar that Burns had even given this 2nd class citizen a shot at the title as you could imagine the race was on to get this man back in his place, the press even printed pictures playing up to stereotypes picturing Johnson in cartoons with big lips or monkey arms .But in true Jack Johnson style he would not bow down or be phased by hate and set about destroying every single white challenger they put infront of him . In there frenzy to find someone to get the title back in white hands the media and press went searching for a great white hope . That came in the form of retired undefeated world champion James J Jeffries who agreed to come out of a six year retirement to take on Johnson . Jeffries didn’t bother himself with Johnson  and was really badgered into this fight and given an offer of $120,000 he couldn’t say no .

The fight was billed as the fight of the century and with all the racial tensions that surrounded all alcohol was banned in the arena in Reno . This was also one of the first fights where pre recorded rights had been sold, with the view of packing out cinemas to show the world “the great white hope ” taking back the world title. Well Johnson didn’t read the script, with his counter punching style he nulled Jeffries ,and after having him down twice Jeffries corner threw n the towel , an action that had reverberation across America . The riots that followed Johnson’s victory saw destruction and violence unseen since the Civil War . There was actually murders attributed to Jack Johnson taking the picked man apart ,Infact it got that bad US congress passed a law banning the recordings being showed ,a law that would be in place for the next 20 years .

If what Jack Johnson  was doing in the ring was causing white America to go crazy what he was doing outside the ring was making him public enemy No1. Johnson like many heavyweight champs loved the party lifestyle , he also had a love of white woman , marrying Etta Terry who he cheated on repeatedly causing her to end her own life . His next wife who he married a month after Etta’s death was Lucile Cameron , this marriage actually had two state governors calling for Johnson to be Lynched and his marriage to be annulled because again she was a white woman , these governors might not have got there wish but it did show the target on Johnson’s back . Before Johnson  had married Lucile she had went on tour with him as part of  his auntrage crossing over state line as Johnson went on beating the best the sport had to offer, this would prove to be his downfall . Investigators had been told to find something , anything to bring Him down and after months of checking every aspect of his life the only thing they could come up with was He had violated the “Mann act”  a law which ironically was brought in to combat slave trading . The state accused Johnson of taking a prostitute (Lucile , Johnson‘s now wife) across state lines for “immoral purpose” but his wife would not take part in this investigation so the case collapsed . A few months later a similar charge was brought because He had took another white woman over state lines before the Mann act was even in place . An all white jury sentenced him to a year in jail causing the champ to go on the run .

After all these blatant attacks on Johnson over his full life the man was still a patriot to his country. When the Second World War kicked off Jack Johnson  was in his 70s he was still putting on exibitions to raise money to fund the American War effort still with that smile on his face which he had his whole life, no matter what was thrown at him. I firmly believe Jack Johnson  laid the foundations for the next generations to take up the fight .

Burns has Broner as reward after Relikh

I have never liked talking about a boxers next fight rather than his upcoming fight but with the news that if Ricky Burns overcomes Relikh he will get his dream fight against Adrian Broner ,a fight I have been waiting for for about 6 years so il make an exception  .

First Ricky has to get past a potential banana skin in the form of Kiryl Relikh,a guy coming across to Glasgow as mandatory with a very impressive KO rate. Now I’m not going to lie I know nothing about Relikh,I have never really seen him fight and read very little about him so what Iam going to do is wing this from what I do know. I have seen a few clips of Relikh and if I’m honest I think he’s going to be out his depth when he takes on Burns . When you see him he is really fighting in town hall events which looks at a domestic level at best . Also going by his boxrec he doesn’t fight outside Belarus very often . This is a fight I shall be ringside for and I think Eddie Hearn knows this is a mismatch because the undercard is quite good with Scott Cardel and Dillian Whyte both on it so it should be a good night in Glasgow’s hydro .

Predictions: this fight will not see halfway , I’m fairly confident Burns will have him out of there around the 4th,5th round it is a world level against a domestic but these things can happen when taking on a mandatory but Burns must keep his eyes on the prize.

It was reported on Sky Sports that Adrien Broner will be ringside and will call out Burns to try and regain the title he he lost due not making the weight in his last fight . Now I’m a massive Burns fan and I for one would love to Ricky get a big payday to take on Broner after a difficult couple of years outside the ring,I is no less than Burns deserves and he won’t just be there to make up the numbers Ricky will have a real shot at adding Broner name as a win on his CV ,but Ricky must stay professional and deal with the fight at hand first .

Crolla vs Linares preview and Prediction

Crolla vs Linares, the fight I’ve been waiting for, this is going to be a cracker really is to close to call but I’m going to give a bash .

This is by far Anthony Crolla’s  biggest test to date against the very talented 3 weight world champion Jorge Linares but Crolla looks to have raised his game in the past few fights which really sets this up as a must see. In Crolla’s last fight against Ismeal Barroso crolla went in as a few peoples underdog and looked to be in trouble early on but in true Crolla style he worked his way out of trouble and had Barroso in trouble before finishing him in the 7th round to retain his WBO World Titile .This fight wasn’t just a testament to Crolla’s grit but also showed a power in his shots that had really went unnoticed .I have no doubt Crolla will have to fight at a level he’s never fought at before but I believe he capable of raising his game to another level.

Jorge Linares is quite simply one of the most skilful boxers in the sport,Linares in full flight is a thing of beauty, the hand speed, the variation of punches with the movement to go with it he really is a treat to the eye. Just as Linares was about to shine after capturing the WBC lightweight world title he suffered a broken hand which seen him stripped of the belt .He will be taking on Crolla with the view of tuning up for his compulsory challenge to regain his lightweight world title  from Zlaticanin,But as good as Linares is there are still big question marks over his chin and Crolla can also take heart from the fact Linares starts to fade in the later rounds whilst Joe Galleghers boxers usally turn it up the second half of the fight .

Predictions: I will be attending this fight in Manchester MEN Arena supporting Crolla hoping he can pull it off but the smart money has to go on Linares . I think it will go to the cards and if it does I can only see a Linares win, if Crolla is to do this he will be looking for a late stoppage around the 10th and with the energy Linares uses up in the first half of a fight you might get decent odds on over 7.5 rounds and crolla stoppage .Either way this is going to be a classic I really can’t wait

Where now for Kel Brook

First off I just want to say a massive well done to Kel Brook who really gave a good account of himself, and really gave GGG something to think about at times in the fight especially in the second round he showed his hand speed could give GGG some problems even if he didn’t have the power to really hurt Golovkin. Kel put up a great fight and showed he was willing to give being great a try .

So where next for Brook? : Well to me it’s obvious, Kel has a big future at 154lbs with some massive fights there for him and might even tempt Khan to come out and take the Brook fight but after Brooks performance against GGG I doubt Khan would be keen on it now. The obvious fight we would love to see as fans is Brook/Canelo and do you know what,I could see Brook giving him all sorts of trouble with the power and speed that he might not carry at middleweight this could also get made quick as it would hold up Canelo finally taking on GGG but be big enough to keep Canelos mass of supporters happy who have slowly but surly been dwindling .

Not a massive blog today but thought I would say my bit and let the folks know that right now I’m probably the highest I have ever been on Brook and filled with confidence He has the ability to clean up at 154lbs if the rest of the division finds its balls .

Brook vs GGG ….I’m torn between heart and mind

So it’s nearly here GGG vs Brook ,and with the old firm game taking place in Glasgow and the Manchester Darby also happening on 10th September  what a weekend of showpiece events we are in for .I have been a critic of this fight but I am starting to get caught up in the hype and the bombardment of sky mouthpieces telling us this is a much closer fight than my own judgement is telling me ,Iam having a dilemma .

My heart : Kel Brook is looking good at middleweight, my main worry was that he was going to eat up to the weight and be flabby, but not at all anyone who’s seen any of the sky sports specials you will see the huge frame and well trimmed body which has Brook looking every bit the middleweight. Brook also hit hard at welterweight so if his power tranferes up to middleweight he will be able to hit and hurt GGG and seeing how Brook controlled Porter by spoiling and choosing when to counter nearly seen Brook get the KO ,will Brook try the same again I don’t know but sky sports seems to think that’s a game plan that could work .

My Mind: No matter how good and ripped he looks at middleweight he is a welterweight, Brook has never been in with a middleweight never mind the No1 middleweight in the world like GGG . A few times on sky sports I have seen them talk about how Sugar Ray Leonard went from welterweight right the way up light heavyweight becoming world champion at at the 5 weights between so Kel Brook can do this …..what a load a shit, comparing Kel Brook to Sugar Ray Is fucking outrageous, sugar is easily top 3 of all time Kel Brook isn’t even No1 welterweight but that’s sky being sky and being the casuals choice for boxing. Kel Brook has never been hit with the power that GGG carries, he’s took big shots before never from someone with this lethal power, never from a machine who hunts to kill . The main factor for me isn’t going to be GGG’s power tho it’s gong to be how he cuts off the ring and forces Kel onto his back foot, Brook just cannot fight on the back foot, I can see it now, as  GGG is pushing him back Brook will put himself in the corner, he doesn’t have the cunning to evade this guy from there on Brook will be fighting on borrowed time .

Conclusion : Even now after all the sky sports build up and matchroom tweets etc I can’t sit down and logically see anyway Brook can win. Yeah Brook looks good and might have a future at middleweight but I rate GGG so highly and don’t see anyway Brook can hurt him or take punishment. My prediction is between 5th and 7th round Brook will have took to much to the body and have nothing left, but I must say this …if Brook can survive to the cards for me that’s victory in my eyes, that’s how big an achievement this would be.

Spence vs Bundu fights review

This fight was a final eliminator to be mandatory to Kel Brook for his IBF Welterweight title . From the off no one really gave Bundu a chance, at the age of 42 this was always going to be a to much for him, but dont be fooled this wasn’t an easy match up by any stretch of the imagination, Spence could not take this guy lightly .

In round one ,we seen Bundu look to confuse Spence buy changing to a right handed stance, Bundu from the start was always looking to come inside off a big wide hook which he had little glimpses of joy . Spence showing great experience for a lad at 26 ,just boxed at length coming in off that fantastic jab of his then back out just breaking Bundu down

Round two , Bundu kept to his game plan of trying to get inside off those big hooks, looking busy but his lack of jab was now apparent, he just didn’t have one. Spence now was finding his range and now working Bundu’s body, and by the end you could really see the body shots taking there toll . Round 3 was pretty much a carbon copy with Spence starting to hit his stride and move up the gears, by now Spence knew Bundu couldn’t hurt him .

Round four , Bundu was showing real heart by now but this fight was slipping away and really you could see Spence just breaking him down ,Bundu also lost his gum shield I’m this and when the ref stopped the fight to let him put it in you could see how heavy he was breathing yet Spence looked to still be stepping it up.

Round five , Bundu was really finding it hard to send anything back Spences way now, and Spence was landing bigger and cleaner and to be honest you sensed the end was coming.

Round 6 , Spence came out landing some heavy shots which looked to rock Bundu who thru fighting instinct caught Spence with a hook which halted the attack and what would have been the end , but only halted it for a min . In the next exchanges Spence throws a shot to the mid range which Bundu looked to block but you could see the energy sap right out his body causing him to lean on Spence, when Spence gave him a nudge to the floor the ref ruled it as a push, but Spence and anyone watching knew Bundu was really hurt and this was the end. As soon as Bundu got up Spence went on the attack pinning Bumdu against the ropes unloading with big shots knowing one would get thru, and a beautiful right hook which got on behind Bundu’s guard and he didn’t see coming really turned out his lights, he was gone before he hit the ground .

Watch out Kel Brook this guys the real deal , I’m a massive fan and right now rank him no2 in the welterweight division behind Thurman, just a matter of time before he’s a world champ.

Kovalev/Ward Tune Ups Done, Who’s More Prepared ?

So with both Kovalev and Ward having there tune up fights before they both have there super fight ,what can we take from there preparation so far .

A few weeks ago we had Kovalev vs Chilemba in Russia ,now anyone who has seen Chilemba fight before knows he’s a very awkward customer and near impossible to look good against also he has never been stopped inside the 12 rounds ,so for a tune up for Ward this was a great match up. Now let’s start with the positives from this fight. The Krusher started slow but more than dominated the fight and adapted very well to Chilemba tieing him up . Having Chilemba on the canvas in the seventh and God only knows how he never went down in the eighth Kovalev showed his power is true and that he will find a way to land in quite an entertaining bout . Now on to some negative points from this fight. I gave Chilemba a couple of the earlier rounds as he was landing the cleaner shots and really keeping Kovalev  at bay ,either using his jab well To keep Kovalev  away or tieing him up before he could get in range to land his big power shots , although Kovalev figured out Chilemba I get the feeling Ward will cause him all sorts of problems in this same way, Ward is a master at spoiling a different class from Chilemba. There where other worrying signs for Kovalev as he seemed to gas from the ninth onward ,now his camp had said he had a virus and to many media commitments before hand but this is still a worry, does he have the engine for Ward ? ……I’m not so sure

More recently Andre Ward took his tune up against Alexander Brand , now there is no way of buttering this up, this was a shocking fight …utter dross ,I’m sitting on my honeymoon trying to watch it and gave up ,really that bad. Now when you fight much lesser openents there is always the chance they can drag you down to there level and we almost had a clash of heads which could have put the super fight with Kovalev  fight in turmoil, also from the little I had seen from Brand he throws from awkward angles so Ward played it cautious, far to cautious if you ask me. Ward did have a shut out which shows how dominant he was and toward the end of the fight he did look to up it for the KO but just didn’t have the power. What I would say is Brand landed a couple of hooks, the kinda punch if Kovalev  catches him with he will be out but if I’m totally honest I wouldn’t judge Ward skill and ability on any part of this fight .

So what can we take from these two fights ? Well really not to much if your looking to see who edges the fight in November , no matter what we seen from Ward against Brand we all know he’s a top class elite boxer but as far as preparations go for November it is 1-0 Kovalev, The Krusher took a better oponent better suited to preparing him for Ward but really this one is still to close to call and I’m still backing Ward at this point but I’m gonna be keeping a close eye on both training camps,an old cliché but  I honestly think this fight could boil down to who is best prepared going into the ring   .

2016 Could Yet Be Saved For Boxing Fans

So what a month this has turned into for us boxing fans after it looked like it could have went pear shaped after the disappointment of Fury vs Klitschko 2 being postponed until October, due to injury to Fury and with Wilder vs Povetkin also a no -starter in May we boxing fans really needed something, anything to pick us up from what has been a really poor year for the sport so far, infact Salido vs Vargas was a classic and will take some beating for fight of the year but my god that seems a lifetime ago .

So With the 12th July heavyweight championship fight being postponed we had to wait until 24th July Crawford vs Postol,a very intriguing match up with the very talented Terence “Bud” Crawford taking on the giant frame that is Viktor Postol to become a two weight lineal champion . Bud Crawford went out and showed a master class in technic, really cruising his way to a very wide points victory after putting Postol down twice in a great performance in which the only criticism could be that Crawford didn’t get the stoppage . This fight really was one for real fans of the sport as there was a lot of clever boxing and fantastic footwork from Bud which for me put him in the top 5 pound for pound .

Now onto 30th July Carl Frampton vs Leo Santa Cruz,a fight which had the  experts divided, could Frampton out class the punching machine Santa Cruz in New York . Even tho Santa Cruz averaged a 1000 punches in the fight, The Jackel did enough to take this very close fight on the cards . Frampton really did raise his game in New York and just done enough if you ask me to merit the win but it really depends on what you like on how you scored it,it really was that well matched .

Now the with these two great fights it has thrown up some great suggestions for match ups and match ups that could really bring the sport back to where it belongs and really save what’s been a dull 2016 so far for the sport .

First match up is Bud Crawford vs Manny Pacquiao. This is a truly mouthwatering prospect for a fight after Pacman announced he will be returning to the ring this November . With Pacquiao style of seek and destroy and Crawfords ability to counter and manouver aswell as get involved in brawl when he gets hit this isa cracker ,also the with the way Crawford switches to southpaw it would leave him open to Pacquiao’s power we could easily see KO of the year  . For me this is a fight that really should be made, styles make fights and these two are very compatible to show something special. This fight really could be made aslong as both boxers are up for as they both fight for Bob Arum (Toprank) which really makes the fight easy to be made and with Pacman really fighting on borrowed time and Crawford looking to become a PPV superstar,Arum himself might want to push for this matchup to be made ,and trust me if it does we could be in for the best fight of the year

Another great matchup up I’ve seen being touted first by Tommy Allan (the boxing asylum podcast) but has gathered great pace when Selby was ringside in New York and has hopes raised in the UK for a unification and domestic superfight between Frampton/Selby . This fight would be massive, two very talented boxers and another fight where there two styles should make for a good fight, with Frampton’s ability to judge distance and make angles and Selby style of grinding you down . This fight obviously not as easy made as with McGuigan  who promotes Frampton and Eaddie Hearn who promotes Selby not really having a great relationship as we seen in the Frampton/Quigg fight. Also a stumbling block is that Frampton would demand to fight in Belfast, which is fair as Selby really struggles to sell tickets . But there are good signs that Selby is keen to get this fight happening, he was there in New York the other night sitting ringside which is always a good sign that a boxer wants a fight and might be open to a few concessions to get the ball rolling .

If one of these two fights gets made it could salvage the year but if the boxing gods shine down and make the them both my god what an end to the year it could be when you think Fury/Klitschko, Kovolev/Ward you could easily put Crawford/Pacquiao and Frampton/Selby up there beside them as great match up .p

Brook vs GGG …Uuffttt

First off I’ve gotta admit I feel a bit of a prick, last weeks blog on Kel Brook was slating him for dragging his heels on the Vargas fight, and that he was making Eddie Hearn look a cunt, I went on ranting about getting this signed and moving on to bigger things in the US . Now we have Kel Brook vs GGG signed and ready to go on September 10th in the O2 Arena ,London and know what, take a bow Kel Brook and Eddie Hearn for making this happen.

Hearn had looked to have pulled off a master stroke when he got Chris Eubank Jnr a world title fight with superstar GGG,not only this but looked to have secured it to take place in the UK. All looked to be going well until as predicted in a earlier blog Eubank stalled, making outrageous demands that Eddie outlines in this IFL interview (Hearn on GGG,Brook and Eubanks ) Hearn gave them 24hrs to sign the contract to no avail so he offered it to Kel Brook who took 2hrs to get the deal done .
Now Kel Brook deserves all the credit in the world for taking on the most avoided man in the world of boxing. Kel Brook might say he’s a big welterweight but to come up 13lbs to middleweight to take on a man who smokes everyone he fights, a man who seen Canelo Alverez vacate his WBC Middleweight title rather than fight him takes some balls on Brooks behalf it’s an amazing sign of intent .

But for every bit of credit Brook gets GGG has some questions to answer, I accept with Eubank being a wanker a fight in the UK was on the verge of collapse, but with Brook having to come up to middleweight is this fight really going to be thy competitive ? .On fight night there will probably be around 2stone between the two boxers, add that in with GGG being a power house puncher who’s hard to evade what chance does Brook actually have . Another match up may have been James De Gale, I believe De Gale would have took it as talk of his unification fight with Jack has gone cold also DeGale will fight anyone so GGG reputation would not have phased him.

In all honesty I’m intrigued by this fight and set up a brilliant September with Smith vs Canelo,Crolla vs Linares and now Brook vs GGG …..fantastic

Just for some comedy here is some of Eubank Jnr tweets ,enjoy
